AMT 1641-165-91 0.63" Viton FS Type 16 Seal Assembly
The AMT 1641-165-91 is the genuine 0.63" (5/8") FS Type 16 seal assembly with Viton elastomers and silicon carbide against silicon carbide faces. Running the same hard material on both sides of the interface is a deliberate choice, and it is the specification you reach for when the liquid is abrasive, the duty is continuous, or standard seals have not been lasting.
A conventional seal pairs a soft carbon face against a hard seat, and it works well on clean liquid because the carbon polishes in and self-lubricates. Put grit into that interface, though, and the carbon is simply the softer of the two materials — it wears, and the wear accelerates as the debris embeds. Silicon carbide against silicon carbide removes that weak side entirely: both faces are harder than the abrasives, and silicon carbide’s high thermal conductivity pulls heat out of the interface so the faces stay flat instead of crazing.
The Viton elastomers cover the chemical side, resisting solvents, acids, oils and temperatures that would swell or harden a nitrile secondary seal. Fit the assembly complete, handle the faces by their edges only, and wipe them with a lint-free cloth immediately before assembly — silicon carbide is hard but it is also brittle, and a chipped edge will leak.
