The AMT 1640-165-90 is the genuine 5/8" Type 21 seal kit subgroup with Viton elastomers and silicon carbide faces, documented in AMT’s solids-handling repair parts material. This is the heavy-duty end of the seal range, and both of those material choices are deliberate upgrades over the standard carbon-and-ceramic build.
Silicon carbide is the reason to buy this seal. It is one of the hardest materials used in seal faces — harder than the sand and grit that finds its way between the faces in solids-handling service — and it conducts heat several times better than ceramic, so the rubbing interface runs cooler and survives marginal lubrication that would craze a softer face. In abrasive duty a silicon carbide pair simply lasts where carbon wears away. Add Viton elastomers and the seal also stands up to chemical attack and higher temperatures.
The Type 21 bellows design completes the package: nothing slides on the shaft, so scale and crystallised solids cannot hang the seal up and stop the face tracking. Fit the kit as a complete subgroup, keep the faces clean and handle them by their edges, and make sure the shaft is free of oil where the bellows grips.
