AMT 1640-162-94 3/4" Type 6A Ni-Resist Seal Subgroup
The AMT 1640-162-94 is the genuine 3/4" Type 6A seal subgroup built around a Ni-Resist disc with carbon and ceramic seal components. Ni-Resist is an austenitic, nickel-alloyed cast iron, and it is specified here for a very particular reason: it holds up to corrosion and galling far better than plain cast iron while keeping the dimensional stability and damping of an iron casting.
In a mechanical seal assembly, the metal parts do more than hold the faces. They locate the seat squarely, resist distortion when the gland is torqued down, and conduct heat away from the rubbing faces. If that metalwork corrodes, pits or grows a scale layer, the seat no longer sits flat, the face pair loses contact across part of its area, and the seal starts weeping even though the carbon and ceramic themselves are still serviceable. Ni-Resist is chosen precisely to stop that happening in corrosive and salt-laden service.
Fit the subgroup complete rather than replacing individual pieces — the components are matched to each other. Wipe both lapped faces with a clean lint-free cloth, handle them by their edges, and inspect the shaft or sleeve where the seal rides before assembly. Confirm the part number against your parts breakdown, as AMT builds several 3/4" Type 6A variants that differ only in materials and are not interchangeable in service.
