AMT 1640-162-91 0.75" Viton JC Type 6 Seal Subgroup
The AMT 1640-162-91 is the genuine 0.75" (3/4") JC Type 6 seal subgroup with Viton elastomers. It is supplied complete — rotating face, stationary seat, spring and elastomers together — because those components are lapped and sized as a set and do not perform correctly when mixed with used parts.
Choosing the Viton version is a chemistry decision rather than a mechanical one. The moving parts of the seal are the same; what changes is that the O-rings and secondary seals are fluoroelastomer instead of nitrile. Viton resists solvents, fuels, acids, oils and temperatures that would swell a Buna ring until it grips the shaft and stops the face tracking, or harden it until it cracks. If your pump handles anything more aggressive than water and mild detergent, this is the version that lasts.
Change the seal when you see a persistent drip at the weep hole, when crystallised residue starts tracking down the shaft, or as a matter of course whenever you have the pump apart for impeller or bearing work. Wipe both faces with a clean lint-free cloth before assembly, handle them by their edges only, and inspect the shaft where the seal rides — a groove or a rough patch there will destroy a new seal quickly.
