AMT 1640-162-90 3/4" Buna Type 6 Carbon/Ceramic Seal Kit
The AMT 1640-162-90 is the genuine 3/4" Type 6 mechanical seal kit subgroup, built with Buna elastomers and a carbon-against-ceramic face pair. It appears in AMT’s repair documentation for the 2" trash pump and 3" solids-handling ranges, which tells you something about the duty it is designed for: liquid with grit and debris in it, and a pump that gets worked hard.
Trash and solids-handling service is about the toughest environment a mechanical seal sees. Abrasive particles find their way between the faces, the pump is often started against a partly blocked suction, and the liquid is rarely clean enough to give the faces a good lubricating film. Carbon against ceramic copes with this better than most general pairings — the carbon is self-lubricating and will embed a certain amount of grit rather than scoring, and the ceramic seat is hard enough to resist being cut by what does get through.
Replace the seal as a complete subgroup. Every element in the kit — rotating face, stationary seat, spring and elastomers — is sized and lapped to work with the others, and mixing new parts with old is the most common reason a freshly rebuilt pump still weeps. Handle the faces by their edges, check the shaft for scoring where the seal rides, and if the pump has been run dry, expect to find heat damage on the faces and plan accordingly.
