AMT 1640-161-97 5/8" Viton Type 21 Special Seal Subgroup Kit
The AMT 1640-161-97 is the genuine 5/8" Type 21 special seal subgroup kit with Viton elastomers, listed for the AMT 489 and 490 Series pumps. Type 21 is the elastomer-bellows design — instead of a rubber O-ring sliding along the shaft to keep the face in contact, the whole rotating element is carried on a flexible bellows that grips the shaft and flexes rather than slides.
That difference matters in dirty service. A pusher-type seal relies on its secondary O-ring being able to move a few thousandths along the shaft as the faces wear; let scale, crystallised solids or rust build up on that shaft and the O-ring hangs up, the face stops tracking, and the seal leaks with plenty of face material still left. A bellows seal has nothing that needs to slide, so it keeps working in liquids that would seize a pusher design. Pair that with Viton elastomers and you have a seal suited to aggressive chemistry and higher temperatures as well.
Fit this kit as a complete subgroup — the rotating face, seat, bellows and hardware are matched to each other. Keep the faces clean and dry, handle them by the edges, and take a moment to check the shaft where the bellows grips: oil or release agent there will let the bellows slip and spin. If the pump was run dry, inspect the faces and the shaft together before assuming only the seal needs renewing.
