AMT 1640-161-92 0.63" Buna JC Type 6A Seal Subgroup
The AMT 1640-161-92 is the genuine 0.63" (5/8") JC Type 6A seal subgroup with Buna elastomers, listed for the AMT 3670-94 bronze marine pump. Type 6A is a compact single-spring design, and the subgroup is supplied complete so the rotating face, seat and elastomers all go in together as the matched set they were lapped and sized to be.
On a bronze marine pump this seal earns its keep. It has to hold back salt water, which is corrosive to almost everything and unforgiving of any part that sits still and wet, and it has to do that while the shaft turns thousands of times a minute with a liquid film between the faces thinner than a human hair. When it goes, the first sign is usually a slow salty drip at the weep hole and white crystalline deposits tracking down the shaft — both of which mean water is already getting somewhere it should not.
Replace the seal whenever it weeps, whenever you have the pump apart for impeller work, and always after a dry-running incident. Handle the faces by their edges, keep them free of grit and fingerprints, and check the shaft or sleeve where the seal rides — a groove there will kill a new seal in short order. Confirm the part number against your parts breakdown, as AMT uses several 5/8" seal configurations that are not interchangeable.
