AMT 1640-161-91 5/8" Viton Type 16 Mechanical Seal Subgroup Kit
The AMT 1640-161-91 is the genuine 5/8" Type 16 mechanical seal subgroup kit built with Viton elastomers and carbon-against-ceramic faces. The Viton content is the whole point of this version. Where a Buna seal is fine on water and mild solutions, Viton (fluoroelastomer) holds up against aggressive chemistry, solvents, fuels, acids and higher temperatures that would swell, harden or dissolve a nitrile O-ring within weeks.
It is worth being clear about what fails first in a mechanical seal. The lapped carbon and ceramic faces are tough; the elastomers usually go first, because they are in constant contact with the liquid and take all of the chemical attack. A swollen or hardened secondary seal stops the rotating face tracking the shaft, the faces separate under vibration, and the seal starts weeping even though the faces themselves still look perfect. That is why matching the elastomer to your liquid matters more than almost any other choice in seal selection.
This kit is listed for AMT’s 1" self-priming 429 Series and the 3600, 3690 and 3700 Series pumps. Replace the seal as a complete subgroup — never mix a new face onto an old seat — and fit it with clean hands and a lint-free wipe on both faces. If the pump was run dry, inspect the shaft and sleeve for heat damage at the same time, because a scored shaft will destroy the new seal too.
