The AMT 1640-161-90 is the genuine 5/8" Type 16 mechanical seal subgroup kit with Buna elastomers and a carbon-against-ceramic face pair. It is supplied as a subgroup — rotating face, stationary seat, spring and all the elastomers together — because a mechanical seal only works as a matched set. Mixing a new rotating face onto an old seat is the fastest way to a seal that leaks from the moment it is started.
A mechanical seal is what stands between the pumped liquid and the motor. Two lapped flat faces are pressed together by a spring, one turning with the shaft and one held still in the housing, and the liquid film between them is measured in millionths of an inch. Carbon against ceramic is the classic general-purpose pairing: the carbon is self-lubricating and slightly forgiving, the ceramic is hard and stable, and together they run quietly for a long time on clean water and mild solutions. Run the pump dry even briefly and that film disappears — the faces heat, craze and lose their flatness, and the seal is finished.
Replace a seal when you see a steady drip from the weep hole, when you find crystallised deposits tracked down the shaft, or whenever you have the pump apart for impeller or bearing work. Fit it with clean hands, wipe the faces with a lint-free cloth, and never lubricate a face with anything other than what the instructions call for.
