AMT 1531-000-00 #243 Buna-N O-Ring, Square Cross-Section
The AMT 1531-000-00 is the genuine replacement #243 Buna-N O-ring with a square cross-section. That square profile is worth noticing, because it is not the round O-ring most people picture. A square-section ring presents a flat face to each sealing surface rather than a line of contact, which gives it more sealing area and better resistance to being extruded out of its groove under pressure. It is not interchangeable with a round ring of the same nominal size.
Buna-N (nitrile) is the workhorse elastomer for water, dilute solutions and general utility service. It handles water, most detergents and mild chemistries well, stays flexible across normal operating temperatures, and resists the abrasion that comes with dirty liquid. What it does not like is heat beyond its rating, ozone, and strong oxidisers — which is why AMT offers Viton and EPDM alternatives for those duties.
Like every elastomer seal, this ring is a single-use item. Once it has been compressed in its groove it takes a permanent set, and a reused ring will not seal to the same clamp load — the classic result is a pump that weeps at the joint, loses prime and starts drawing air.
