Fuel Systems

  In regions that aren’t fortunate enough to have good weather for boating all year round, Memorial Day signals the start of the sailing season. Be ready. Tune up, pump up, and polish!   Check your safety equipment, lines, hoses, and sails. Get ready to launch.   Here are a few handy tips to make your boating season run smoothly.   Paperwork Get your boating paperwork updated and in order. Permits, registration, decals, certificates, and licenses must be up to date. The Coast Guard, Marine Police, and the Conservation authorities may stop you and board your vessel to check for up-to-date permits and equipment. It is an excellent time to review your boater’s insurance policy. Check to see if your situation has changed and if you need additional coverage. Then, submit your paperwork as early as possible to avoid fines.    Onboard Systems Replace the oil filter and lubricate all parts; lower-case should be free of oil leaks Electrical systems such as fuses, spark plugs, and wires should be checked and adequately replaced Empty your fuel tank and refill it with fresh fuel and fuel treatments Flush the water tank Fully recharge your battery and fill the cells with distilled water All lines should be checked Inspect the propeller for damage or fishing line Check that hull is free of blisters and cracks The engine anode must be inspected every three months or less.  Replace boat anodes once a year.  Check your outboard anode yearly.  Check your prop shaft anode monthly.  Check the hydraulic steering system for proper fluid levels, leaks, and tilt Inspect the steering, shift, and throttle cable Check and change all of the fluid levels as appropriate, including engine oil, power steering, and coolant   Communication Clean all screens on GPS, VHF radio, chart plotters, and fish finders. Replace any batteries with fresh new ones. Check wires and fuses. Check and repair antenna mounts, speakers, and mics. Test communication equipment while tied to the dock.   Having a variety of communication options, according to CLR Marine VHF radios, cellular amplifiers, loud hailers, hailer horns, and mobile broadband options - helps you stay connected in a number of ways. “Having different options to reach out to people can bring peace of mind in a serious situation, and can also just help you have more fun while you are out enjoying the waterways."    Trailer If trailering your boat, pay special attention to wheel bearings, tires, and brake lights.   Dock Lines Check all dock lines for chafing and fraying. Better to replace than repair.   Safety Equipment Flares, throw cushions, life jackets. The intense sun can do a number on cushions and life jackets, and flares and fire extinguishers must be current before expiration. The Coast Guard, marine police, and conservation law enforcement take out-of-date safety equipment very seriously, and they enforce heavy fines if you are non-compliant.   Don’t forget the Docks Check all dock lights and electrical fittings for loose wires. Our major distributor has started posting expected delivery dates for the items we sell.  We hope to have that available to our customers very soon.  We have also added a few new product lines, Otter Products, RepairTech, Sierra and VEI Oceanview.   We have dropped Quicksilver parts due to a 12% increase in our cost. To take carry of that lack of powerboat parts we have added the Sierra line which is a direct replacement for Quicksilver.  We will be adding the complete Sierra Catalog in PDF version to our site soon.    We have slowly been updating the Universal Engine Parts, with photos and descriptions when available.    Remember if you don't see what you are looking for ask us, we can probably get it for you.

 Outboard Fuel Line Issues   We could not start our outboard engine.  WHAT'S WRONG??    Our outboard engine usually always starts on the first pull and it is not flooded.   Trying to pump fuel through the squeeze bulb was a waste of time as fuel would not fill the bulb.  Take the line off the engine and put a screw driver in the end and sometimes it would pump fuel and sometimes it would not.  So you have to figure it is an issue with the hose or the bulb.  All fittings were factory tight and when the hose was submerged in water no air bubbles when squeezing the bulb.  Let's just replace the hose. We got lucky and got the dinghy started.  Off to the local chandlery we go, it was about a mile walk from the dock.  We were towed back to the boat because again we could not get the outboard started. This is our second fuel hose on a two year old engine.  Anyway I removed the fittings without a lot of work and reinstalled them on the new hose with new clamps.  The outboard is now starting on the first pull again.   About three weeks have gone by, we are now having starting issues again.  Now what? I pull the spark plugs out and the engine is not flooded.  That leaves a fuel issue again. I start playing with the fuel line again, it can not be this, I'm saying to myself.  I pull off the engine side of the fuel line from the bulb and nothing seems wrong.  Put that back together and take the tank end of the hose off the bulb.  There's an issue, I can't blow through it.   So I pull off the tank fitting, there it is, about a ½” in you can see something blocking the hose.  So I cut off about 3 inches of that end, I still could not blow through it. Cut off another 3 inches and found that same looking blockage twisted up in the hose.  What is this junk, this $50.00 fuel hose is garbage.  This time I have a new idea, can I pull this blockage out?  I was able to get hold of enough of that stuff to pull it all out of the hose.  It's a plastic liner and was twisted in several spots.  I ran some fuel through the hose without the liner, now to get rid of the glue that was used to keep the liner in place and then the engine ran fine.   Hose three, that's what I said hose number three.  This has to be a fluke so I bought another new hose and will change it out the next time I have an issue.  Well later is here and guess what.  The outer hose on this new replacement has shrunk some and the thin plastic liner is sticking out both ends of the new hose.  That hose was almost $65.00 as we were again in another country.   I have since replaced the Outboard Fuel Hose with Automotive Fuel Hose and put a plastic wire loom over it to protect it from the UV rays.  I'm just hoping the squeeze bulb I reused does not have a liner in it.  So far so Good two months later, our outboard starts on the first pull.       Closeouts     Rebates    Remanufactured    Specials
