In regions that aren’t fortunate enough to have good weather for boating all year round, Memorial Day signals the start of the sailing season. Be ready. Tune up, pump up, and polish!
Check your safety equipment, lines, hoses, and sails. Get ready to launch.
Here are a few handy tips to make your boating season run smoothly.
Paperwork
Get your boating paperwork updated and in order. Permits, registration, decals, certificates, and licenses must be up to date. The Coast Guard, Marine Police, and the Conservation authorities may stop you and board your vessel to check for up-to-date permits and equipment.
It is an excellent time to review your boater’s insurance policy. Check to see if your situation has changed and if you need additional coverage. Then, submit your paperwork as early as possible to avoid fines.
Onboard Systems
Replace the oil filter and lubricate all parts; lower-case should be free of oil leaks
Electrical systems such as fuses, spark plugs, and wires should be checked and adequately replaced
Empty your fuel tank and refill it with fresh fuel and fuel treatments
Flush the water tank
Fully recharge your battery and fill the cells with distilled water
All lines should be checked
Inspect the propeller for damage or fishing line
Check that hull is free of blisters and cracks
The engine anode must be inspected every three months or less.
Replace boat anodes once a year.
Check your outboard anode yearly.
Check your prop shaft anode monthly.
Check the hydraulic steering system for proper fluid levels, leaks, and tilt
Inspect the steering, shift, and throttle cable
Check and change all of the fluid levels as appropriate, including engine oil, power steering, and coolant
Communication
Clean all screens on GPS, VHF radio, chart plotters, and fish finders.
Replace any batteries with fresh new ones.
Check wires and fuses.
Check and repair antenna mounts, speakers, and mics.
Test communication equipment while tied to the dock.
Having a variety of communication options, according to CLR Marine VHF radios, cellular amplifiers, loud hailers, hailer horns, and mobile broadband options - helps you stay connected in a number of ways. “Having different options to reach out to people can bring peace of mind in a serious situation, and can also just help you have more fun while you are out enjoying the waterways."
Trailer
If trailering your boat, pay special attention to wheel bearings, tires, and brake lights.
Dock Lines
Check all dock lines for chafing and fraying. Better to replace than repair.
Safety Equipment
Flares, throw cushions, life jackets. The intense sun can do a number on cushions and life jackets, and flares and fire extinguishers must be current before expiration. The Coast Guard, marine police, and conservation law enforcement take out-of-date safety equipment very seriously, and they enforce heavy fines if you are non-compliant.
Don’t forget the Docks
Check all dock lights and electrical fittings for loose wires. Docks should have an emergency shut-off switch for electricity on the docks.
You will have a fun-filled boating experience if all of your equipment is clean and well maintained.

LH5000 Loudhailer 30W
Your safety needs perfect communication
The Furuno LH5000 is a powerful Loud Hailer designed to immediately draw attention to your vessel by amplifying your voice, or any of eight internationally acknowledged warning signals, through the horns. The LH5000 allows you to instantly notify nearby vessels of your presence and status regardless of limited visibility conditions, such as thick fog or dark of night, that might otherwise mask your presence. Using up to six powerful horn speakers with an impressive output power of 30 watts each, the LH5000 is sure to capture the attention of anyone in your proximity.
Up to 6 Intercoms for onboard communications and public address
The LH5000 can also be connected to onboard intercom speakers. Because the Intercom feature is a completely separate function of the LH5000, you won't have worry about the impressive warning signals being transmitted through the dedicated two-way intercom speakers! The LH5000 can also gather distant sounds and amplify them through its built-in speaker. This feature, called Listen Back, is incredibly useful for the pilot to hear voices from the docks, deck, or even other nearby vessels. Other features include Siren Mode, which can be connected to the vessel's fire detection systems, and an Alarm Mode, which is very useful when it comes to theft detection. You can even connect a CD player or Radio to play high-volume audio through the horns and intercom speakers.
Features
Two (2) 30 Watt hailer output channels (FWD & AFT)
Up to six (6) 5 Watt remote intercom stations, allowing two-way communication between master & individual remote station, or all stations, simultaneously
Bright LCD with user-programmable intercom names for easy operation
Built-in high quality speaker for intercom & hailer listen capability

Manually controlled hailer warning signals

FM4800 VHF Radio with AIS, GPS & Loudhailer
Marine VHF Radiotelephone with Class D DSC, GPS Receiver, AIS Receiver and Simplified Loud Hailer
The FM4800 is a marine VHF radiotelephone with built-in Class D DSC, GPS Receiver, AIS Receiver, and Simplified Loud Hailer with intercom. Its compact housing enables it to be installed in a variety of craft, even vessels where space is limited, such as center-console boats. The unit can be mounted on its lightweight bracket, either desktop or overhead, or it can be flush mounted. The FM4800 shares a common appearance with other Furuno equipment, such as NavNet TZtouch2, NavPilot 711C, and the FI70 Instrument series, offering an integrated appearance to any helm.
With its built-in GPS receiver, the FM4800 does not require an external GPS source to enable its DSC functionality. The unit can be used as a backup source of GPS positioning for other onboard electronics. Its built-in AIS Receiver can be used to overlay AIS targets with networked GPS Plotters or MFD's, such as NavNet TZtouch, NavNet TZtouch2, or GP1871F/GP1971F combo units.

An existing GPS source can be connected to the FM4800, and it can share its own GPS, DSC and AIS information via NMEA0183 or NMEA2000. When connected via NMEA2000 to any NavNet TZtouch2 MFD, DSC calling can be initiated directly from the TZtouch2 MFD by simply tapping on the AIS/DSC target and selecting [DSC Call]. Additionally, when MOB (Man Overboard) is activated on a TZtouch2 MFD, the FM4800 enters a special mode where you can initiate a distress call by simply pushing the rotary knob.
Loud Hailer, Intercom & Listen Back Features
The FM4800 can operate as a simplified Loud Hailer with intercom, featuring 8 patterns of alert sounds. Loud Hailer, Fog Horn and Warning Signal features are all available, enhancing onboard safety and communications while navigating in the dark or fog. When connected with the second-station handset, intercom communications are available, allowing communications between the two devices. Additionally, the horn speaker can be used to collect external sounds and transmit them through the built-in speaker with a function called Listen Back. In this way, a person on the deck can easily communicate with the bridge, a particularly useful feature for a variety of fishing vessels and workboats. The Listen Back function can also be an effective tool on sport fishing vessels, allowing the horn speaker to collect the sound from fishing rods and lines when you get a strike.
